Description
I lived near a large rail yard when I was quite young. Every night I listened to the cry of the Wabash Cannonball (a famous train). One day an older neighborhood boy dragged me to the rail yard and then ditched me there (I was about 8). While trying to find my way out which involved some tunnels I was nearly hit by the Wabash Cannonball as it came barreling through the yards. It missed me by inches so I have quite an impression of it visually. I made some drawings of it years ago. One hangs on my youngest sister's wall. A family friend of theirs, dale (always small d), used to come over to her home, sit in front of it and stare at it. Since I hadn't painted the engine I decided to give it a go as a core image in a bigger painting. I called my sister and told her I had started on the engine and that dale would probably like it. That's when she informed me that he had passed the very day I had started the painting. I decided to paint dale's likeness in the cab and place a small plaque on the engine with his name. His wife had passed only a few years earlier, they had children in their early twenties. This is a celebratory painting for them, myself and anyone who remembers.
